MY LATEST VIDEOS
I was 7 years old the first time I flew in an airplane, and even though I have struggled with a fear of flying for most of my life, I haven’t allowed it to get in the way of my love for traveling. In fact, I’ve been to some pretty amazing places throughout my life – Singapore, Nepal, China, Thailand, Malaysia, The Philippines, Hungary, Austria, and Italy to name a few – and could talk your ear off about all of the cool things I’ve been fortunate enough to experience, and which ones I recommend the most.
But with cold and flu season upon us, those stories can wait. All that matters if you have travel plans in the not-so-distant future is how to stay healthy to ensure you get the most out of your trip, so today I am teaming up with the fabulous folks from Emergen-C Chewables® to share 7 of my best tips to stay healthy while traveling.
1. STAY HYDRATED
I know. I know. I used to get irritated when people constantly reminded me to stay hydrated, too, but when I (finally) adopted the trend of drinking 8+ glasses of water a day, I was amazed at what a difference it actually makes in terms of how I look (less bloat and clearer skin) and how I feel (more energy, less fatigue, and weight loss). I find proper hydration is even more important when we’re traveling, especially if we’re in a hot climate and/or plan on indulging in a couple of late-night cocktails. If left untreated, dehydration can be a really serious medical condition, so drink up and do your best to avoid a trip to the ER due to carelessness!
2. STICK TO BOTTLED WATER AND AVOID ICE
While we’re on the topic of hydration, one thing I cannot stress enough is the importance of opting for BOTTLED water when you’re traveling. This probably isn’t necessary if you’re sticking close to home, but if you’re venturing abroad, bottled water is always the smarter choice. I go the extra mile and insist I open bottled water myself to ensure the seal is intact, and refuse any beverages with ice, including those pool-side margaritas and daiquiris!
3. DON’T SCRIMP ON SLEEP
While I’m all about making the most of my vacation time and try to pack as much as possible into my time away, I try my hardest to get ample sleep in the days leading up to my holiday so my body doesn’t give out and get sick the moment I start to relax. I also make it a point to grab catnaps and hit the sack early when we’re away so I don’t crash when we get home.
4. KEEP GERMS AT BAY
Whenever we board a plane, the first thing I do is wipe down the arm rests, seat belt buckles, trays, and audio/video controls with antibacterial wipes. My husband thinks this is ridiculous and embarrassing, and I often get looks from the other passengers (‘crazy lady in seat 33C!’), but few things can ruin a family vacation more than a tummy bug, and I am not willing to take the chance.
5. WATCH WHAT YOU EAT
While I am all for overindulging and enjoying myself while traveling, I try my hardest to make healthy choices for at least 2 of my meals each day, and when we travel overseas, I try not to be too adventurous with my food choices. I also avoid buffets – you never know how old the food is and cannot guarantee the water from the ice within the buffet did not contaminate the food – and if I’m eating in a local establishment while abroad, I use my mum’s best friend’s advice, which is: if you can’t cook, peel, or boil it, don’t eat it.”
6. DON’T FORGET YOUR SUPPLEMENTS
I have never been big on taking daily vitamins (I prefer to stay healthy through diet, sleep, and exercise), but I do try to take immune-supporting supplements during cold and flu season, and while traveling, in an effort to keep my body in tip-top shape. The only problem is, I tend to be a bit forgetful, but thanks to Emergen-C Chewables, I can take my supplement of choice while on the go.
Have you heard of Emergen-C Chewables? It’s a great-tasting dietary supplement which features electrolytes, essential nutrients including B vitamins to enhance energy naturally, immune-supporting vitamin D and antioxidants, zinc and manganese, plus 1000mg of vitamin C.
