How to Become a Morning Person: 6 Simple Secrets That Work! | Looking for tips to help you wake up with the sun feeling refreshed and full of motivation? Perfect for moms with kids, millennials in college, or for teens in school, this collection of tips will give you the inspiration you need to stop being a night owl and embrace mornings like a boss!

I have never been much of a morning person. I either wake up too late, take too long in the shower, can’t decide what to wear, drop an eye shadow palette all over the bathroom floor, or have some kind of hair emergency, and motherhood has done nothing but amplify those things. After years of sleep deprivation, my patience isn’t what it used to be, and trying to make myself look presentable while simultaneously feeding my family and wrestling my daughter into her school uniform before my coffee has had a chance to take hold isn’t exactly my idea of a good time.

But in the last several months, I have started to be much more deliberate with my time. I made a vow at the beginning of 2017 to find more balance in my life, and I’m slowly learning that the only thing standing in the way of me having a good day or a great day is ME.

I’ve learned that I can feel miserable for the first few hours of the day, or I can wake up feeling empowered and happy, and while I still have days where I feel like pulling the covers over my head, I choose to be happy more often than not, and today I’m teaming up with De’Longhi to share my best tips to teach YOU how to become a morning person!

PREPARE THE NIGHT BEFORE

If you find yourself scrambling in the morning, one of the best things you can to reduce feelings of overwhelm, stay organized, and get out the door faster is to plan ahead. Block of 30 minutes every evening to pack your bag, select your outfit, pack your lunch, lay out your breakfast essentials, unload the dishwasher, and complete anything else you can think of to help streamline your morning routine.

GO TO BED EARLY

I know this isn’t rocket science, but since we live in a day and age where sleep is very low on our list of priorities, it bears mentioning that getting 7+ hours of good quality sleep will not only help you feel energized when you wake up in the mornings, but it will also improve your focus and attention, lower your stress levels, and help you maintain a healthier weight. Consider moving your bedtime back by 15 minutes everyday over the course of a week or so until you’re clocking enough sleep to leave you feeling rejuvenated when you wake up.

SLEEP WITH THE CURTAINS OPEN

It has been said that exposure to natural sources of light, particularly early in the morning, can go a long way in helping to reset our internal clocks. Of course, this is often much easier said than done, especially among those who work in windowless offices, but there are other things you can do to help increase the amount of light you are exposed to. Go for a walk or jog first thing, eat your breakfast on the back deck, or sleep with the curtains open!

DO ONE THING YOU LOVE WHEN YOU WAKE UP

If you want to know how to become a morning person, one of my best secrets is to do something you love when you wake up. This could be writing in a gratitude journal, Face-timing with your BFF, practicing yoga, or reading a good book. The point is to find something you’re passionate about, to schedule it into your morning routine, and to protect that time like a newborn child. The more motivated you are to get out of bed each day, the more likely you are to become a morning person!

BE CONSISTENT

Another tip to keep in mind if you want to become a morning person is to be consistent. As tempting as it is to stay up late and sleep until noon on the weekends, maintaining proper sleep hygiene will ensure you are getting ample sleep every single night so that you are well-rested and full of energy when you wake up each morning.

GET EXCITED ABOUT BREAKFAST

While not everyone will agree that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, I beg to differ. Starting your day with a nutritious meal not only helps regulate your blood sugar for greater focus, but it also gives you the fuel you need to get through your day and helps kick start your metabolism. Of course, time isn’t usually on our side in the morning, but there are lots of quick and healthy options that don’t take a ton of time to make, and they all pair nicely with a hot, steaming cup of joe. Here are 5 of my favorites!

Greek yogurt and trail mix

Since yogurt is easy on the stomach, it’s an ideal breakfast choice for those who like to squeeze a workout into their morning. Throw in some trail mix (dried fruit, seeds, and nuts), and you’ve got an excellent source of energy. The nuts will also keep your insulin levels from dropping mid-sweat session, but make sure not to go overboard. Seeds and nuts are high in fat and can make you feel sluggish if you eat too many. Consider pairing your yogurt fix with Nespresso’s LINIZIO LUNGO Grand Cru coffee – it’s round and smooth with just enough of a kick to start the day with a bang!

Overnight oats

If you’re a fan of planning ahead like me, overnight oats is the way to go. Simply throw ¼ cup whole oats, 2 teaspoons of chia seeds, ¾ cup Greek yogurt, and ½ cup of berries into a container, let it sit in the fridge overnight, and ta da! The breakfast of champions is waiting for you when you wake up in the morning.

Whole wheat toast with nut butter and banana

Whole-wheat toast with nut butter and banana provides you with the perfect mix of complex and simple carbs. The toast will keep you going throughout your morning, while the banana gives you a burst of much-needed energy; plus the combo is easy to digest. Bananas are also a great source of potassium, and nut butter is packed with protein, giving you a fabulous morning boost! On days I’m feeling extra groggy, I pair mine with Nespresso’s ROSABAY de Columbia. It has a fruity taste to it, but at a intensity of 6, it still gives me a good jolt!

Green smoothie

Green smoothies offer a quick and delicious way to load up on your greens without having to scarf down broccoli and kale at the dinner table every night. Most of us don’t eat nearly as many greens as we should, and smoothies are a great way to remedy this on the go. You can even blend up a batch at the beginning of the week to store in the fridge. The blend will last you for a few days! I make mine with ½ cup frozen mango, ½ cup fresh pineapple, a handful of spinach, 1 ½ cups coconut milk, 1 banana, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, and 1 tablespoon hemp seeds. BOOM! Nutrition and deliciousness all wrapped up in one!

Whole wheat toast with avocado

Whole grains are an excellent breakfast choice as they are absorbed slowly, making you to feel full longer, and they also contribute to healthy bowels (!!!) and help prevent cardiovascular disease. Avocados are one of my favorite toast toppers as they offer a delicious way to add healthy fat to my diet. With potassium and magnesium, they enhance your muscle function, plus they’re easy to digest and they’ll keep you satisfied throughout the morning. I pair mine with a latte made with Nespresso’s CARAMELITO because…caramel. 🙂

As you may or may not have guessed, I’m not only a fan of protein-rich breakfasts in the mornings; I like to enjoy a delicious cup of joe as well. I have been a coffee fiend for as long as I can remember, and when I was asked to take a De’Longhi Lattissima Pro for a test drive, I eagerly accepted.

And I’m so glad I did!

The Lattissima Pro is a combination of the Nespresso capsule system and De’Longhi’s Automatic Cappuccino system, allowing for simple one touch premium espresso based, barista-style beverages. Its sleek, stainless steel design compliments our kitchen, and it is by far the most efficient coffee machine I have ever owned. It has completely revolutionized my mornings, and I find myself rarely visiting my local coffee shop anymore. I simply don’t need to!

Here are the things I like most about my De’Longhi Lattissima Pro:

    • It heats up quickly – about 25 seconds for an espresso, and 40 seconds for a latte – allowing me to enjoy the drink of my choice within minutes each morning. Talk about convenient!!!
    • It uses pods, which means I don’t need to mess around with a grinder and measuring spoons, and my coffee is always fresh.
    • It offers variety. The machine provides six pre-programmed drinks: ristretto, espresso, lungo, cappuccino, latte, hot milk and hot water for simple, one touch beverage brewing with the perfect amount of milk every time.
    • It allows for personalization. I can program it to remember the amount of coffee, milk, and froth I like for the perfect cup of coffee morning, noon, and night!
      • It’s a decent size. Given all that the De’Longhi Lattissima Pro can do, I find the unit pretty compact. It’s large enough that the water and milk containers can make more than one drink at a time, but it doesn’t take up a ton of counter space and overpower our kitchen.

Making my morning cup of coffee has never been easier, and I love that I can enjoy a simple espresso or jazz things up with a flavored latte or macchiato when I’m feeling adventurous.

J.B. Priestley once said, ‘I have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning.’ I find this quote inspiring because it reminds me that, no matter how hard yesterday was, I get to wake up with a new slate and make my mark on the world each morning.

So, what’s it going to be?

Is today going to be a good day, or a great one?
