Why you’ll adore it
Some people call ground beef stew “poor man’s stew,” however this meal has a lot of delicious tastes! When you want a cozy stew that doesn’t take long to make, this is the recipe for you. Sometimes it’s wonderful to spend more time cooking a Classic Beef Stew.
Your whole family will love this stew that doesn’t cost a lot of money. You can feel good about providing them a full dinner in one pot with real food like beef, vegetables, and robust potatoes. It just takes about an hour to make, and most of the time you don’t have to do anything.
What you’ll need

- Sauté the celery, onion, garlic, and olive oil to form a great-tasting foundation.
- Beef: I use ground beef that isn’t too fatty. It’s a terrific way to cut calories while preserving flavor and moisture. You usually don’t have to bother about draining off extra fat after it’s been browned.
- Don’t forget the flour; it’s what makes everything thicker.
- Tomato paste is a simple technique to add extra savory taste.
- Beef broth tastes a lot better than just using water.
- Worcestershire sauce adds flavor to this stew without being too strong.
- Italian seasoning is a mix of dry herbs that comes in a single jar.
- Potatoes, carrots, and peas are robust and satisfying veggies that go well with this stew.
Tools you need for this recipe

- I prefer my Staub Dutch oven, but any soup pot would do.
- I immediately smash the garlic using my garlic press. I do this for a lot of recipes that ask for minced garlic!
- Use a good chef’s knife to cut up the vegetables.

How to cook hamburger stew

This is a summary with pictures that show each stage. You can find the full list of ingredients and directions on the recipe card below.
In a soup saucepan, cook the onion and celery until they are tender. Then add the garlic. Add the ground meat and heat until it is brown.
Add the flour and simmer for a few minutes, stirring constantly (this gets rid of the floury taste). Add the tomato paste and mix it up.
Put in the broth, Worcestershire sauce, Italian spice, potatoes, and carrots. Bring the stew to a boil, then turn the heat down and let it simmer until the potatoes and carrots are soft. Add the peas and salt and pepper to taste.
How to do it
- Put the oil, onion, and celery in a soup pot and cook them over medium-high heat for 5 to 7 minutes.
- Stir in the garlic and simmer for 30 seconds.
- Put the beef in the pot and cook it, breaking it up with your spoon as you go, until it is brown (approximately 8 minutes).
- Sprinkle in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes (stirring often).
- Stir in the tomato paste.
- Add in the broth, Worcestershire sauce, Italian spice, potatoes, and carrots. Turn the heat up to high and let it boil. Turn the heat down to a quick simmer and cover the pot (with the lid slightly open). Stir the pot every now and then for at least 30 minutes, or until the potatoes and carrots are soft and the flavors have had time to build.Add extra liquid if the stew starts to get too thick, and if you want it thicker, simmer it for longer with the lid off.
- Add the frozen peas and salt and pepper to taste.
Changes and substitutions
You can add whatever extra vegetables you have on hand. You may use up any surplus vegetables in your fridge in this stew. Root veggies would be the best choice.
I added Italian seasoning to the stew to make it taste better, but you could use a different kind of dried herb mix or even steak seasoning if you want.
Want some heat? Add some crushed red pepper flakes to the mix.
What to eat with hamburger stew

It is a full supper on its own, but I will never say no to a piece of crusty bread to make it even heartier. Or go all out and get a slice of Extra Cheesy Garlic Bread.
You could also have a salad on the side. This Homemade Ranch Dressing goes great with mixed greens. You’ll never buy the stuff in bottles again!
Storing and using leftovers
The flavors mix together more the next day, making this stew even better. If the leftovers are a touch dry, just add a splash of beef broth when you reheat them to produce extra sauce.
If you put leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge, they will last for 3–4 days. This stew also freezes nicely.
