Bang Bang Chicken Ingredients and Smart Substitutes
Chicken: I used boneless, skinless chicken thighs to get the most tender and juicy chicken. You could also use chicken breasts or thighs with bones in them. Add paprika, salt, and pepper to the chicken. Make sure the chicken is cooked all the way through, no matter what kind it is.
The best part of this recipe is the homemade Bang Bang sauce. I like it so much that I’ve used it in other dishes, including Bang Bang Shrimp and Bang Bang Salmon, to mention a few.
Can I make the Bang Bang sauce ahead of time?
Yes! This dish is simple and quick to make, and it goes even faster if you already have the bang bang sauce ready. Put the sauce in an airtight jar in the fridge after mixing it. It will last for a week! Stir it before you use it.
How to do it

- Mix the salt, black pepper, and paprika together in a small bowl.
- Spread the seasoning mix evenly over the chicken.
- Put oil in a big nonstick skillet over medium heat. Once it’s heated, add the chicken thighs. (You might have to work in batches, depending on how big the skillet is.) Five minutes of cooking chicken. After that, turn the chicken over, lower the heat to medium-low, and cook for another 5 minutes, or until the chicken’s internal temperature reaches 165°F. The size of the chicken may affect how long it takes to cook.
- Take the cooked chicken out of the skillet. Put it on a plate and cover it to keep it warm.
- Add the bang bang sauce to the pan. Scrape off the brown bits from the bottom of the pan as you stir. Let it cook for 1 to 2 minutes, or until it’s hot all the way through.
- Put the chicken thighs back in the skillet and cover each one with the sauce.
- Add green onions on top. Serve.
