Star Apple Slices for the 4th of July

These Star Apple Slices are a fun spin on Caramel Apple Slices for the 4th of July. They are apple slices with stars in the middle and chocolate and star sprinkles on top.
Introduction & Background
Can you believe it’s been almost ten years since I released a tutorial for Caramel Apple Slices that went crazy viral and is still one of my most popular recipes?
I wanted to make something like this for summer, using the same edible gold paint I used earlier this year, but with star sprinkles on top.
It looks like falling stars now! And who doesn’t adore looking at the stars at night after a day of fun in the summer sun?
I usually chop the apple from side to side, leaving the core intact. This time, though, I opted to cut it on its side and then use a star cookie cutter to take out the core.
Here are some fundamental ideas, however I suggest reading the whole post for more useful tips.
- Cut thick slices of apple so that the stick stays in the apple slice. It works well if it’s around 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.
- Make sure to press each apple slice dry with a towel to soak up any extra liquid. This will help the chocolate stick better and not slide off.
- Let some of the Dark Chocolate Melting Wafers drip off the apple slice and onto the stick. This will work like glue to keep the stick and apple together.
ps. I used edible paint and a pastry brush, which is a brush that is only used with food.
Star Apple Slices Description

These Star Apple Slices are a creative take on Caramel Apple Slices for the Fourth of July. They have star-shaped apple slices in the middle and chocolate and star sprinkles on top.
Things you need
- Apples
- Cookie Cutter in the Shape of a Star
- Sticks for lollipops that are white or made of wood
- Chocolate that melts
- Toppings are optional.
- Gold Stars — This is a similar one to Edible Gold Paint.
- Edible gold paint
- Gold star sprinkles
How to do it
- To begin, wash your apple, lay it on its side, and cut it into pieces.
- Use a star cookie cutter to cut off the core. Dry off the apple slice.
- Next, put the stick in the bottom of each apple and dry the slices with a towel.
- Put melted chocolate on each slice of apple and let it solidify on a piece of wax paper. Keep doing this until all of your apple slices are covered with chocolate.

- Then, apply edible gold paint on the hardened chocolate and sprinkle gold star sprinkles on top of the edible gold paint.
- Enjoy your food paint after it has dried.
Notes
You can make these Star Apple Slices the day before and store them in the fridge on wax paper or in a sealed container until you need them the next day. However, I suggest making and eating them the same day. We ate the leftovers after they had been in a sealed container for three days, and they were still good (not brown).
More Advice

- Cut the apples into thick slices so the stick stays in place. It works excellent if it’s around 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.
- Be sure to pat the apple slices to get rid of any extra juice.
- Let some of the chocolate drip onto the stick. This will work as a kind of edible glue that keeps the stick and apple together.
- If you use caramel, make sure it’s somewhat chilled so that the chocolate doesn’t melt off the apple slices.
- I also think you should make them and consume them the same day. The longer they sit, the more likely it is that a caramel apple slice will start to cry, which will make the tasty coating split or slide off in certain places.
I hope you enjoy making, sharing, and eating these Star Apple Slices!
