I shall use the terms mental health and mental wellness interchangeably.The World Health Organization says that mental health is “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”
We need to be mentally healthy in order to think, feel, talk to each other, work, and live a full life. So, encouraging, safeguarding, and restoring mental health is very important for people, communities, and civilizations all over the world.
What Does It Mean to Have High Levels of Mental Health?

When people are mentally healthy, they learn more, are more creative, and get more done. They also act in ways that are good for society and have good relationships with other people. They are also linked to better health and a longer life.
Creating spaces where you can do well at work, school, and in your daily life is an important part of good mental health. We all have problems in our life that make things harder and make us feel confused. To do well in school, most children need to put in a lot of time and effort and stick to a strict schedule, which can be bad for their mental health. So, we need to have plans in place to keep our mental health safe when things get stressful.

It has been shown that chronic stress harms the hippocampus (McLaughlin, Gomez, Baran, & Conrad, 2007).

Things to Do to Improve Your Mental Health

Making small changes to your life doesn’t have to cost a lot of money or take a lot of time to improve your mental health. A lot of people can accomplish this. So why not start now? But if you can’t do even one of the things listed below, ask yourself, “What’s stopping you from doing them?” It could be time to start your therapy.
1) Talk about how you feel
Since we were kids, most of us have learned to hide our sentiments.
“Don’t be sad.”
“It’s not good to be mad.”
“I don’t like it when you’re sad.”
These are some of the things that many of us heard when we were kids. But when people can’t communicate about their feelings, it means their mental health is bad.
A kid who can talk about how they feel can stay mentally healthy and get through tough times. Don’t forget that talking about your feelings doesn’t make you weak. Instead, taking care of your health is part of remaining healthy and being in command of your health.
2) Work out
Regular exercise can make you feel better about yourself, help you sleep better, and make you feel better. Exercise also keeps your brain and other important organs healthy, which is good for your mental health.
There are various methods to stay active or work out. The goal is to choose something to do that makes you happy and is fun.
- Going for a walk
- Dance
- Working out
- Going for a swim
- Biking

- Doing sports

3) Food for the Brain
As a student, it’s important to be healthy so you can learn and remember what you learn. Also, staying healthy will help you reach your academic goals.
The most important part of a healthy diet is making sure your body and mind are well-fed and ready to handle tough tasks. Some meals are still very good for your brain and mental efficiency.
- Green vegetables, beans, lentils, and other foods are high in fiber.
- Berries
- Oranges and grapefruits are examples of citrus fruits.
- Almonds, walnuts, and other nuts
- Eggs
- Avocados
- Fish
- Beetroot
- All kinds of vegetables
4) Getting in touch with relatives and friends
It’s important to connect with others. This is especially true right now because of the pandemic, which makes it hard for students to see their friends and relatives.
Face-to-face is one of the finest ways to catch up with someone, but it’s not always practical. More students today use the internet to talk to each other, hold Netflix parties, and have fun in general.
Meeting up with family and friends instead of studying is good for your brain and helps you relax.

5) Get aid
A lot of the time, kids don’t ask for help because they don’t want to look dumb. Some of my customers are too nervous to ask questions in class because they are afraid of being made fun of.
We are not all born superhuman or perfect. Everyone needs support at some point. We get tired or stressed out when we feel bad or when things don’t go as planned.
If you think you can’t handle things, ask for help. Your relatives and friends might be able to help you out or give you advise.
6) Take breaks often
Our brains soak in information. It needs to be squeezed every so often to make room for new learning. You may also say that our brain is like our phone. Just like you remember to charge your phone, you should also remember to charge your brain. Taking pauses is the best way to refresh.
Changing your surroundings or the speed of your life can be good for your mental health. Here are several methods to take a break:
- A five-minute break from your study.
- Giving your eyes a break for five minutes.
- Maybe a break for lunch when you don’t have to think about school.
- A weekend of discovering new locations.
It only takes a few minutes to relax and refuel. So, take some time for yourself.
7) Allow yourself to take a break
Finally, give yourself permission to start strengthening your mental health and resilience.
- Playing is allowed
- Being lazy is okay
- Getting permission to do nothing
- You have permission to be yourself.
- You have permission to stop and cherish yourself.
- You have permission to stop and be thankful.
- You have permission to stop and think about the actions you’ve done thus far.
- You have permission to stop and enjoy the moment.
- You have permission to stop and say, “I’m fine as I am.”
