Understanding Liver Health and Cleansing
A lot of information is available about how to keep your liver healthy. A lot of doctors suggest doing rigorous liver cleanses, fasts, and detoxes as a way to clear the liver. But I don’t think this is a good idea.
We need to love our livers. They are stressed, overworked, and bombarded. I strongly suggest that you nurture your liver every day instead of undertaking a cleanse that can take nutrients out of your body or following harsh detox recommendations that might be unpleasant on your health.
There are a lot of natural foods and supplements that can help keep your liver healthy and provide mild, safe, and effective support.
“But I Don’t Feel Pain in My Liver.” Is my liver in good shape?”
The liver is a one-of-a-kind organ that can even grow back after 80% of it is taken away!
This is astounding, yet we can live with as little as 1/6th of our livers. It can take years or even decades before we notice any obvious liver problems. It might be too late by then.
People often claim to me, “I don’t have liver pain, so I must not have liver problems.” I don’t think that’s true at all, and we’ll talk about the signs of a slow liver soon.
We can assist our livers work better and stop disease from happening in the future by knowing the early indicators of liver problems.
Why it’s so important to keep your liver healthy!
Natural liver support is VERY important for good health and well-being.
People don’t think about their livers very often in everyday life. We usually think about our brains, hearts, and lungs before we think about our livers.
We are exposed to a lot of environmental contaminants these days, including in our food, air, home items, and even our furniture. One of the liver’s jobs is to get rid of poisons by changing them into less harmful molecules that may be passed out. But when the liver is overloaded with pollutants and not getting enough nutrients, it can’t do its function well.
This seems to be the cause of both the fat epidemic and a SAD lifestyle.
When the liver can’t manage all the toxins coming in, they get deposited in fat. All of these items can make you sick! Disease will start when your body can’t get rid of the trash.
Anyone who has ever been sick will have some kind of liver problem, along with a leaky gut and mineral imbalances. All three are connected.

What are the liver’s main jobs?
It really does about 500 various things for the body. Yes, you read that right: 500 different functions! Here are some of the most important things the liver does, according to HealthFree:
- Making three-quarters of your total cholesterol, which is required to make hormones and bile salts
- Storing up to 1 liter of blood when there is too much blood so that it can be used when there is a lot of blood loss or severe activity
- Making 1 quart of bile every day to break down fat and make toxins less acidic
- Detoxifying proteins that haven’t been fully broken down, too many hormones (such estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, etc.), medicines, dietary additives, toxins, and so on.
- Turning beta-carotene into vitamin A
- Breaking down and taking in vitamins A, D, E, and K. If your liver isn’t working right, you won’t be able to use these vitamins, no matter how much you consume.
- Keeping too much vitamin A, B-12, D, K, and iron
- Transforming ammonia, a byproduct of protein breakdown, into urea for elimination by the kidneys.
- Before the blood goes into the general circulation, it filters out bacteria from the intestines.
- Making up to 4 ounces of glucose a day, if necessary (for example, when fasting or having diabetes)
- Cutting down on blood sugar swings by as much as 65%.
The liver is in charge of a lot of critical things.
It’s not surprising that so many individuals are sick and unhealthy because an unhealthy liver can’t handle all of those processes well.
What is the liver and where can I find it?
What are the most common signs of a sluggish liver?
“Sluggish Liver” suggests that your liver and gallbladder aren’t performing as well as they should be. Here are several signs that your liver is sluggish, again from HealthFree. The most prevalent ones are in bold.
- Bad digestion
- Too many hormones (the liver breaks them down and is the most important organ for hormone control).
- Higher levels of cholesterol
- Bloating in the stomach or pain in the liver area
- Acne, skin rashes, itching, or jaundice (skin that looks yellow)
- Not being able to go
- Tiredness (poor energy)
- Not wanting to eat
- A taste in the mouth that is bitter or metallic
- Hair with split ends
- Nails that break easily
- Mood swings (because blood sugar levels change a lot)
- Hemorrhoids or varicose veins (caused by liver congestion putting strain on the veins)
- Pain in the back between the shoulder blades
- Can’t digest fats
- Keeping water in the legs
- When you put a blood pressure cuff around your calf, it hurts your muscles.
- Problems with the gallbladder
- Problems with sleep
- Heart palpitations or even heart attacks (The liver is where all the blood travels to the heart. If it is congested, the heart may not get enough blood.)
- Bad memory
- Allergies
- Arthritis
- Problems with the thyroid
- Numbness in the hands and feet often
- Infection often
- Fainting
- Night blindness or fuzzy vision (The Chinese think that the liver is the river that goes into the eyes and nourishes them with clean, nutrient-rich blood.)
Do you have any of those signs? I can promise you that you have at least one.
There are two parts to liver detox, and you can read about them here. There’s also a GREAT chart that shows what each phase needs. For various phases, you require a lot of different nutrients. Some foods and plants can really aid some phases.
Can detoxing and healing the liver cause a detox reaction?
When we first start to heal, detox reactions are very frequent.
We can be full of poisons since chronic illnesses are the result of years of absorbing pollutants and not getting enough nutrients. When our bodies get too much of anything, they store it in fat. This means that you can have a lot more in your body than you think.
This is why you should take your time when you start something new. Be patient with your body! We didn’t get sick overnight, so we need time to get better.
Ways to Naturally Make Your Liver Work Better
If you have a long-term sickness, you will undoubtedly need to heal your liver in some way.
The best part about adopting NATURAL ways to heal is that many things are good for more than one thing. So choosing a few things from the lists below can help with healing in general, not just liver health!

What foods, drinks, and herbs are good for fixing the liver?

When you want to eat foods that are good for your liver, you have a lot of tasty natural foods and herbs to select from.
Also, try to eat as clean as you can. Try to eat less processed meals and more organic and non-GMO foods. Local foods are even better.
Here are some of my favorite natural and nutritious foods and drinks that help the liver heal:
Spices and herbs that help the liver heal
- 1. Turmeric, ginger, cayenne, and garlic
These herbs are all fantastic for your health and well-being in general, but they can also help your liver repair and get rid of toxins. - 2. Herbal Teas
You make herbal infusions by soaking or steeping herbs like nettles, oatstraw, and red raspberry leaf in water and then drinking the water. It’s a lot like how you prepare tea. Infusions are quite good for your health, and most of them are good for your liver, lymph, kidneys, and adrenal glands.
Drinks that help the liver heal
- 1. Tea or decoctions made from dandelion root
Dandelion root tea is one of the simplest things you can do to improve your liver. For long-term use, choose the root over the leaf (the leaf is the part of the plant that makes you pee).
Dandelion is good for people who are recovering from cancer, infections, hepatitis, and its main job is to clear the body. It can assist with a lot of things, like low blood sugar, UTIs, high blood pressure, acne, losing weight, anemia, jaundice, constipation, and more.
Dandelion cleans out poisons from the blood, lymphatic system, kidneys, liver, and urinary system. Dandelion is a bitter herb, which makes it great for digestion. This tea from Traditional Medicinals is GREAT for these benefits. - 2. Bone broth, gelatin, or collagen
Protein is like food for the liver. Its amino acids assist the liver repair and get rid of toxins. But what’s the best way to obtain that protein? My favorite is collagen, although bone broth is also quite good. Another good choice is gelatin. Kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, and kombucha are all fermented foods that are great for your liver health. They also offer anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-diabetic characteristics.

What are the best supplements for liver health?
- Lecithin from Sunflower
Sunflower Lecithin isn’t very widely known yet, but it’s becoming more popular. This type of lecithin has a lot of phosphatidylcholine, which is a B vitamin that is very important for the health of the liver and the metabolism of fat. It helps the liver get rid of fat and get bile flowing, and it is also very vital for brain health. - Liver Love
Earthley’s Liver Love is a great and gentle tincture that helps the liver. It is produced from organic ingredients including turmeric root, milk thistle seed, dandelion root, and peppermint leaf. It helps with natural detox, regularity, and bloating and gas while also reducing inflammation.
