Can you believe it’s been almost a decade since I shared a tutorial for Caramel Apple Slices that went crazy viral and continues to be one of my most popular recipes?
I wanted to make something similar for summer, using the same edible gold paint I used earlier this year, but with the addition of star sprinkles.
So now it looks like falling stars! And who doesn’t love star gazing late at night after a day of fun in the summer sun!?
While I typically cut the apple from side to side (not eating the core – just around it), this time I decided to turn it on its side when cutting and then remove the core with a star cookie cutter.
Below are some basic tips, but I recommend checking out the full post, filled with many more helpful tips.
3 recommendations:
- Cut thick apple slices so that the stick stays secure in the apple slice. Approximately 1/2 – 3/4 inch thick works good.
- Make sure to pat down each apple slice really well with a towel to soak up any extra apple juice so the chocolate will stick better to it and not slide off.
- Allow some of the Dark Chocolate Melting Wafers to drip off of the apple slice and onto the stick. This will act as a sort of edible glue that holds the stick and apple together.
I hope you have fun making, sharing, and eating these Star Apple Slices!
ps. I used edible paint and a pastry brush (not a paintbrush) only ever used with food.

- Edible Gold Paint – Here is a similar one
- Gold Stars
Instructions
- First, wash your apple, turn it on its side, and cut it into slices.
- Cut out the core with a star cookie cutter. Pat the apple slice dry.
- Next, insert the stick at the bottom of each apple and pat the apple slices dry.
- Cover each apple slice in melted chocolate and place on a piece of wax paper to harden. Continue this process until all of your apple slices are covered in chocolate
- Then brush edible gold paint on the hardened chocolate and sprinkle gold star sprinkles on the wed edible gold paint.
- Let the edible paint harden, and enjoy! (*1)
Notes
- *1. These Star Apple Slices can be made the day before and left in your fridge on wax paper (or a sealed container) until you need them the next day (although I recommend making and eating them on the same day). I left it in a sealed container for 3 days and they were delicious (not brown) when we ate the leftovers. Just don’t forget to note the 5 tips below.
More Tips
- 1. Cut thick apple slices so the stick stays secure in the slice. Approximately 1/2 – 3/4 inch thick works great.
- 2. Make sure to pat down the apple slices to soak up any extra apple juice.
- 3. Allow some of the chocolate to drip onto the stick, this will act as a sort of edible glue that holds the stick and apple together.
- 4. If you use caramel, use slightly cooled caramel so that the chocolate doesn’t melt off the apple slices.
- 5. I also recommend that you make them and eat them on the same day. The longer they sit the greater the chance for a weeping caramel apple slice, which will cause the yummy coating to break or slide off in some areas.
